UPDATE - Boil Water Notice
UPDATE:
As of 3 pm today chlorine is successfully being injected into the system. We will monitor the level of chlorine in the water to ensure it meets ADEC (State) as well as City standards before lifting the notice. We anticipate being able to see sufficient progress within the next 24 hours.
Please keep in mind that though the "boil water notice" may be lifted an overall boil water notice will remain in effect, as it has since 2007, due to the system's inability to filter the water. This "master" boil water notice will remain in effect until a new water treatment plant is constructed and brought online.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Adak water system treats water by cholrine gas, due to the amount of water capacity, as designed by the US Navy. We do not have filtration installed in this obsolete water treatment plant and have been on a boil water notice since at least 2007.
In order to mitigate risk we inject more cholrine in the system than required, to ensure we have a residual of up to 5x the required amount. This ensures that any potential organisms are elimitated. We observed a drop in chlorine residual on Friday and are attempting to understand the cause. As we are continuing to try, we have noticed the residual is dropping further.
As the residual has dropped below ADEC system requirements we are required to inform you to boil water used for drinking. This requirement has been in place, again since 2007, however it is critical that you boil your water. We are attempting to fix the problem as soon as possible.
Instructions:
Continue to boil all water used for drinking. An update will be provided.
