Indiana State Police Captain Keith Kopinski Retires after 30 Years
Indiana State Police Captain Keith Kopinski is set to retire after 30 years of service with the department. However, his career in law enforcement will continue with the University of Notre Dame. Kopinski recently accepted a position with the university as the Deputy Chief of Security Services.
Kopinski, a South Bend native and graduate of LaSalle High School, was appointed to the department in November 1986. Kopinski holds a bachelors degree from Indiana State University where he majored in criminal justice.
Kopinski was initially assigned to the Connersville Post in east central Indiana for two years before transferring to the Bremen Post where he worked as a trooper in St. Joseph County.
Kopinski earned his first promotion to the rank of sergeant in 1997 and his second promotion in August 2008 when he was named the assistant commander of the Toll Road Post in Bristol. In 2010 he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and assumed command of the Toll Road Post. Kopinski received his last ISP promotion to the rank of captain in 2013 where he served as the area commander of the Toll Road, Bremen, and Ft. Wayne Posts.
During his tenure, Kopinski has been a member of the Tactical Intervention Platoon, and a Field Training Officer for newly hired recruits. Kopinski is also a member of the Indiana State Police Possible Club. The Possible Club is a shooting award that is earned for outstanding marksmanship. Since the inception of the award in 1946, there have only been 280 troopers that have earned the Possible Club Award. Kopinski got the distinction by shooting four perfect scores in two separate phases of the state police firearms program.
Kopinski resides in New Carlisle with his wife and two daughters.
