The SFPD Wants You To Celebrate New Year's Safely: Don't Shoot Guns On New Years!
The San Fernando Police Department wants everyone to enjoy a safe New Year's eve and reminds all not to discharge a firearm into the air to celebrate the arrival of the new year.
Shooting a firearm into the air is not only irresponsible, but also a felony crime. Penal code section 246.3(a) states that willfully discharging a firearm in a grossly negligent manner which could result in injury of death to a person is a felony offense.
The saying of "what goes up must come down" is particularly applicable when new year's revelers fire bullets into the air. Falling objects speed up as they return to earth and even a single, small caliber bullet has the distinct probability of causing serious bodily injury or even death.
If you see someone discharging a firearm, call 911 immediately. Take cover under shelter on and around midnight or stay indoors to help protect yourself.
Enjoy a safe and healthy New Year and don't shoot!
