Original release below:
Tippecanoe County-Yesterday, January 9, 2017 at approximately 11:18 p.m. troopers from the Indiana State Police out of the Lafayette Post were sent to a crash on I-65 southbound near the 162 mm (that is approximately six miles south of the 168/SR 38 exit) and discovered that the vehicle had been stolen out of Gary on January 7, 2017.
Upon arrival to the scene, troopers found a 1998 dark colored S-70 Volvo that had been crashed into the cable barriers and became disabled and left abandoned. Upon further investigation, troopers discovered that the Volvo had been stolen out of Gary, IN at gunpoint a few days earlier. A search for the driver and possible passengers lead the troopers to a second disabled vehicle that was about ½ mile north of the original crash scene with a flat tire. The driver explained that three subjects had asked him for a ride to Lafayette but he refused them for he had explained to them his car was disabled. He went on to tell the troopers the subjects walked off the interstate into the nearby wooded area.
A search of the area turned up three subjects, two males and a female walking on County Road 900 East and County Road 700 South by Trooper Brad Mull and his Probationary Trooper Douglas Feazel and detained them. The female was found to have a possible injured foot and was transported by ambulance to IU Arnett Hospital. Her condition is unknown at this time. The other two were transported to the ISP post at Lafayette for further investigation.
The investigation is ongoing. No further information will be released at this time. Information on the original car theft should be directed to the Gary Police Department. Assisting at the scene were Troopers from the ISP Post at Lafayette, Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Department, Clinton County Sheriff’s Department and Tippecanoe County EMS.
Suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
