Unintended Discharge
This morning at approximately 1:30 a.m. officers from the Corona Police Department conducted an investigation of a suspicious vehicle, illegally parked in front of a construction site in the 2700 block of Palisades Drive, Corona. As officers approached the vehicle to determine if it was occupied and assess the situation, an officer unintentionally discharged one round (shot) from his handgun. The round entered the front passenger side door and stopped inside the front passenger area of the vehicle. It quickly became known to the officers on scene that the vehicle was occupied by one adult male who was seated in the driver’s seat. The occupant of the vehicle was not injured. The occupant, who officers later learned was an on-duty private security guard, was interviewed and released at the scene. No arrests were made or citations issued.
Members of the Corona Police Department Detective Bureau responded to the location and began an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the unintended discharge. That investigation is ongoing. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office was notified and is assisting with the investigation.
