Scam Alert - Suspect claiming to be a US Marshall
PHONE SCAM - CALLER CLAIMING TO BE A US MARSHALL
The Sanbornton Police Department received a reported scam in which the caller identified himself as a US Marshall. He knew the name of a resident of the house, and was requesting to "verify" her social security number. He claimed there was a federal warrant out for the person for failing to appear for jury duty.
I did reach out to the New Hampshire US Marshall's Office and learned that this scam has been around for years. They haven't received recent reports, so it obviously coming around again. In the past, SPD has had similar reports with callers claiming to be with the DEA, FBI, and Secret Service.
Please remember, as with all potential scams, never give out personal information as a response to calls or emails. When in doubt, please reach out to your local police department, so the matter can be checked out.
Please pass the word.
Thank You
