ISP Arrests Suspect from Earlier Gun Incident with Putnam County Deputy Sheriff

Putnam County—This afternoon, Indiana State Police troopers served a Putnam County Superior Court arrest warrant on 35-year-old Adam Wagner upon his release from Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. The charges are related to a domestic battery investigation and the subsequent pointing of a handgun at a deputy sheriff.

Troopers transported Wagner to the Putnam County Jail and incarcerated him on the following warrant charges: (2) counts of Intimidation (level 5 felony); (1) count of Strangulation (level 6) felony; (1) count of Domestic Battery (level 6) felony; and (1) count of Criminal Confinement (level 6) felony.

On Thursday evening January 12 at 11:18, three Putnam County Sheriff’s deputies, Jeffery Freeman and Anthony Brown, and special deputy Ian Zeffel, responded to a 911 call from Wagner’s live-in girlfriend reporting a domestic disturbance at their home at 6400 North County Road 490 West, Greencastle, IN.

After arriving at the 6400 CR 490 W home, deputies were attempting to follow-up on the domestic violence allegations, when Adam Wagner suddenly exited a southern lower level door and pointed a handgun at special deputy Zeffel. Deputy Freeman immediately drew his weapon and ordered Wagner to drop his, at which time Wagner pointed the weapon at Deputy Freeman causing Deputy Freeman to fire two rounds from his service weapon striking Adam Wagner in the torso. Wagner had been undergoing treatment at Methodist Hospital since the shooting.

The female victim had signs consistent with a physical struggle and domestic battery. There were two toddlers belonging to the couple in the home and they were unharmed and released to family.
