Local hero needs your help! Join us for a Bone Marrow Match Drive THIS SATURDAY!
A message from Jorge’s hospital bed: “I encourage everyone to become a bone marrow donor. Even if you turn out not to be MY perfect match, you might be someone else's perfect match. There are so many of us that are waiting and hoping our match will be found soon. By taking a few minutes and becoming a donor, you can be an angel and save one of our lives and keep our families together.”
Sergeant Jorge Chavez was recently diagnosed with leukemia. Sergeant Chavez was assigned to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department San Dimas Station from 2013 to 2016, and has served with the Sheriff’s Department for 17 years. Sergeant Chavez is in need of a lifesaving marrow donor, and until a match is found, blood and platelet donations will be in dire need. There is currently no matching marrow donor for Sergeant Chavez. It is our intent to help facilitate multiple events to help find a bone marrow match. You can make the difference!! It only takes two minutes of your time to fight the battle against leukemia. Join us Saturday, January 21st, 2017 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the quick and easy process to see if you might be a match for Sergeant Chavez!! Please click here http://bit.ly/2jA9a8O to see the event flier. Thank you!
Location: San Dimas Sheriff’s Station 270 S. Walnut Avenue, San Dimas CA 91773 (909) 450-2700
Donors who are tested receive a complimentary BBQ lunch! For all others, we’ll have a fundraiser price of just $7.00/plate. If you’re unable to attend one of the bone marrow match events, you can request a swab kit via mail http://join.marrow.org/swabforjorge
To be a MARROW donor you must be between the ages of 18-44, be willing to help any patient in need, and be in general good health.
BLOOD AND PLATELET DONORS may do so at City of Hope. Donors must be age 17 or older, in good health, and meet basic requirements. Please see the City of Hope website for details on blood and platelet donations: http://bit.ly/2iY8pWg
If you have questions, or to donate platelets “directly” to Jorge, please e-mail RARobbin at lasd.org to coordinate our efforts.
A special message from “Cops 4 Causes”:
“Cops 4 Causes was inspired to initiate a “Heroes Match Challenge” by local hero Sgt. Jorge Chavez. Jorge is currently fighting leukemia and is in need of a life-saving bone marrow transplant. He expressed enthusiasm in educating community members and fellow First Responders about the importance of registering as a bone marrow donor. We have taken Jorge’s sentiments and created this program to challenge First Responder agencies nationwide, to both educate their personnel and community members, as well as host at least one “Be the Match” drive per year. Cops 4 Causes will also be initiating a Match Fund, which will help raise funds for fellow First Responders who are in need of a life-saving bone marrow transplant. We would like to cordially invite you to learn more about our new Heroes Match Challenge on our website www.cops4causes.org.”
The Los Angeles County Sheriff family, and the Chavez family, thank you in advance for your help in finding life-saving help for Jorge!
