Bloomington – Yesterday afternoon just after 2:30, a 2007 International semi tractor-trailer started across SR37 from Winery Road heading west to Simpson Chapel Road. The semi driver then performed an illegal U-Turn and proceeded east across SR 37. This maneuver occurred in the path and right of way of a southbound 2011 Chevrolet passenger car.
The driver of the Chevrolet attempted to avoid impact but was unable to do so.
Once the Chevrolet collided with the trailer of the semi, the semi continued to travel eastbound, causing the passenger car to roll over and become entrapped underneath the trailer.
The driver of the passenger car, Jeremy Johnson, 41 of Bedford suffered head and back injuries and was transported to IU Health Bloomington. His passenger, Elizabeth Johnson, 37 of Bedford suffered head injuries and was also transported to IU Health Bloomington. Both were transported via IU Health Bloomington Hospital Emergency Medical Transport Services.
The driver of the semi, Roy Cummings, 61 of Medora was not injured.
Seat belts were in use during this crash and were effective in reducing the nature of the injuries.
Trooper Gabriel Bault and Trooper Richard Klun investigated the crash. The Monroe County Sheriff's Department, Monroe County & Bloomington Fire & Rescue Personnel along with IU Health Bloomington Hospital Emergency Medical Transport Services assisted at the scene.
