4 Year Old Child Taken into Protective Custody from a Homeless Campsite
On Wednesday, January 25, 2017, at about 1:30 PM, acting on information from Shasta Support Services, Anderson Police Officers responded to a green belt area inside the city limits to investigate reported child neglect circumstances occurring in a transient camp.
Officers located the reported camp hidden within the green belt. There was rotting food, trash, and human waste scattered about the area. Given the recent adverse weather conditions, the area was cold and wet. A four year old child was discovered inside the tent. A campfire was burning inside. The child was improperly clothed for the conditions. Very little food was located at the campsite. Additionally there was broken glass pipes, the type commonly used for smoking methamphetamine in the bedding where all three subjects were contacted by officers.
APD officers placed the child in protective custody. Shasta Child Protective Services later responded to accept custody and came of the child.
The parents of the child were interviewed on scene and referred to the various services available to them for assistance within the county. The couple refused services or further assistance and declined to discuss the matter.
APD will be be completing the investigation and submitting the case to the District Attorney requesting child neglect/abuse related charges against the couple.
