STRUCTURE FIRE 915 WEST MORRISON

NEWS RELEASE
January 25, 2017

STRUCTURE FIRE 915 WEST MORRISON

On at approximately 1219 hours the Santa Maria Fire Department responded to multiple reports of a multi-unit residential structure fire. Arriving Fire Companies found two well involved apartment units extending into adjoining apartments and the attic space. Santa Maria Police Officers evacuated the entire building of occupants prior to Fire Department arrival. An aggressive interior attack coordinated with vertical ventilation quickly knocked down the main body of fire, however multiple ventilation holes and extensive overhaul finally put the fire under control. Concealed spaces due to building design slowed progress of fire suppression efforts. A thorough search of all units in the building resulted in no fatalities or injuries. A total of seven Engine Companies, One Aerial Truck Company, two Battalion Chiefs, and four Fire Investigators responded to this incident. Santa Maria Police provided traffic control, security, and initial evacuation. American Medical Response performed a medical standby, rehab, and patient treatment. Santa Barbara County Fire and CAL FIRE SLO provided response to the scene, as well as station coverage and city responses for simultaneous incidents. The Gas Company and PG&E responded to the scene to secure utilities. The Red Cross attended to 46 displaced occupants since the building was uninhabitable. Building and contents loss is estimated at $500,000. The cause of the incident is still under investigation.

Questions may be directed Fire Battalion Chief Mike Barneich, 925-0951 ext. 2335.
