Overnight Multi County Chase Leads to Incarceration for the Driver

Sullivan County—Early this morning at 12:40, Indiana State Police Trooper Brad Miller attempted to stop a red 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe for a stop sign violation in the town of Hymera. As Trooper Miller activated his emergency lighting, the driver fled westbound on State Road 48 and then northbound on US 41. The chase continued into Vigo County with Vigo County sheriff’s deputies deploying stop sticks at Pimento Circle, which the driver struck and deflated the two front tires. The suspect continued northbound through the city of Terre Haute with officers from various agencies blocking intersections for safety. Once through the city of Terre Haute and northern Vigo County, the chase continued into Parke County with Parke County sheriff’s deputies deploying stop sticks on US 41 at County Road 900 South. The suspect again struck the stop sticks damaging a rear tire and continued on driving on the rims of the vehicle. The suspect turned west onto SR 163 and as he was crossing the Wabash River Bridge, Clinton city police officers deployed another set of stop sticks which the suspect struck and deflated the remaining tire(s). The chase ended when the suspect drove into a private yard at the intersection of 7th and Front streets in Clinton.

The driver was taken into custody and identified as 29-year-old Shane Corey of Terre Haute, IN. Corey was preliminarily charged with Resisting Law Enforcement with a Vehicle (level 6 felony); Habitual Traffic Violator (level 6 felony); and Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated-Refusal (misdemeanor). Corey was incarcerated in the Sullivan County Jail.

Vehicular traffic was very light during the chase and there were no injuries of any kind related to this event. The incident lasted nearly 45 minutes with initial speeds reaching near 80mph. After striking the stop sticks on US 41 at Pimento Circle, the two front tires were deflated causing the vehicle to travel on the rims with speeds averaging between 40 and 50mph for the remainder of the chase.

The arresting officer was ISP Trooper Brad Miller. Assisting were ISP Troopers David Petrowski and Rondell Shelton, Sullivan city police officers, Sullivan County sheriff’s deputies, Vigo County sheriff’s deputies, Terre Haute city police officers, West Terre Haute police officers, Indiana State University police officers, Parke County sheriff’s deputies, Clinton city police officers, and Vermillion County sheriff’s deputies.

Attached book-in picture is Shane Corey.
