A Fayette County resident reported a scam phone call in which the caller represented themselves as a DIRECTV employee and the calling number showed as the 1-800 number for DIRECTV.

The caller requested the homeowner purchase a pre-loaded Amazon Gift Card to make a DIRECTV payment or their services would be suspended. The homeowner became suspicious and reported the incident.

As with other phone call scams the caller will often use intimidation and tricks to perpetuate the scam. In this case DIRECTVs phone number was "spoofed." The "spoofed" number was likely performed with a free smartphone app which lets the user appear to be calling from any number they wish.

When in doubt call your service provider for answers before buying pre-paid cards or sending money. Once the money is sent there is very little chance it can be recovered.
