A male adult was arrested at 4:15 a.m. on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 after an off-duty police officer saw him driving a van and taking mail from a mailbox in the Via Verde area of San Dimas. The van fled from the witness, failed to stop at several stop signs, and was subsequently stopped by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies near Via Verde and Covina Hills Road.  Upon contact with the driver and sole occupant, the deputies could see a large amount of loose mail piled in the van.  28 year old Joseph Reilly, a former resident of Covina, was subsequently arrested for possession of stolen property, Identity Theft-related charges, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and a pre-existing no-bail warrant for drug sales.  Upon conducting an inventory of the van deputies discovered more mail, tools, sports equipment, and clothing - all possible stolen property.  Follow-up investigation is being conducted at this time by detectives assigned to San Dimas station.  The initial investigation determined that some of the recovered property was recently stolen from a school outside California.  Detectives will make contact with any known victims in the course of the investigation, and photos of recovered property may be posted soon if the owners cannot be identified.

San Dimas Sheriff’s Station is one of six stations within the East Patrol Division of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The Station’s jurisdiction encompasses approximately 276 square miles. In addition to serving the City of San Dimas, the station serves unincorporated communities of Azusa, Covina, Glendora, La Verne, Claremont, Pomona, the Los Angeles County portion of Mt. Baldy, a large portion of the Angeles National Forest (State Route 39), and portions of Angeles Crest Highway (Highway 2). The population for these areas is approximately one hundred and five thousand (105,000), nearly sixty sixty-nine thousand (69,000) in the unincorporated areas and more than thirty-six thousand (36,000) in the City of San Dimas.
