Hammond, Lake County-A Chicago man stopped for a traffic violation, last night, began a foot pursuit, fought with a trooper, and ended up at the Lake County Jail.
At approximately 9:29 p.m., yesterday, February 10, 2017 evening, Trooper Alaa Hamed had exited the Indiana Toll Road onto Indianapolis Boulevard (Blvd) in Hammond when he saw a 2001 Buick Century go by at a high rate of speed, passing other vehicles, and disregard a traffic control device. The Buick drove through a red light and stop in the middle of the intersection of Indianapolis Blvd and 110th/108th Streets in Hammond. Hamed activated his emergency lights and pulled behind the Buick.
As Hamed approached the car he saw two males in the front seat. When the driver, later identified by an Illinois driver’s license as Marques J. Bates, 30 of Chicago, Illinois, lowered his window an overwhelming odor of alcoholic beverage and other indicators from Bates that he may be intoxicated.
Bates was given a field sobriety test and a portable breath test. He was then read implied consent to which he agreed. Shortly thereafter, Bates became verbally combative and began to resist when Hamed tried to place handcuffs on him. Bates attempted to walk away from Hamed.
Hamed attempted to detain Bates who pulled away from Hamed and ran east into the grassy/muddy field with Hamed behind him and pushed Hamed. Bates then fled on foot northbound on Indianapolis Blvd towards 108th St.
Hamed returned to his police car and drove north on Indianapolis Blvd. and blocked off northbound lanes with his police car. Bates then turned around and ran southbound on Indianapolis Blvd. towards 110th St. Hamed left his police car and pursued Bates on foot.
At one point, Bates turned around and faced Hamed who ordered Bates to get on the ground by gun point, yet Bates fled again with Hamed in pursuit. Bates ran northbound in the southbound lanes of on-coming traffic on Indianapolis Blvd. where Hamed had to physically tackle him.
While on the ground, a fight ensued, where Bates struck Hamed several times. After fighting for a couple of minutes Hamed was able to get Bates right hand and began to handcuff him. Two Good Samaritans assisted Hamed with restraining Bates and he was able to finish handcuffing him and placing him in his police car.
Trooper George Hornsby, Hammond Police, and Hammond Fire EMS arrived. Both Bates and Hamed were medically cleared at the scene.
Bates again became combative and was transported to the Lake County Jail in Crown Point.
The passenger was released who was sober.
Bates was charged with: Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer (Level 6 Felony), Resisting Law Enforcement (Class A Misdemeanor), Operating While Intoxicated Refusal (Class A Misdemeanor) and Operating While Intoxicated Endangering (Class C Misdemeanor)
