On 02/13/2017 just after 1:00 pm, alleged non-complaint registered sex offender 27 year old Kevin Michael Smith of rural Angola was taken into custody at the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office without incident. An arrest warrant had been issued for Smith by the Steuben County Superior Court on 02/10/2017 charging Smith with one count of failure to register as a sex or violent offender, a level 6 felony. The warrant came after a Sheriff’s Office investigation into allegations that Smith failed to report required information to the Sheriff’s Office within the lawful time period. Once the warrant was issued, Sheriff’s detectives reached out to the US Marshals Service Northern District of Indiana’s Great Lakes Taskforce for assistance in the apprehension of Smith. Sex Offender Investigations Coordinator Senior Inspector William Boothe was able to make contact with Smith who agreed to come into the Sheriff’s Office where he was placed under arrest. Smith was booked into the Steuben County Jail and is being held in lieu of a $5,000.00 bond.
