Wanted non-compliant registered sex offender Samuel Brett Smith has been captured in Brown County, Texas. On 02/17/2017 just before 11:30 am Eastern Time, Samuel Smith was located and apprehended without incident in Brown County, Texas by the United States Marshals Service North Texas Fugitive Taskforce with the assistance of the Brown County Sheriff’s Office and the Brownwood City Marshal’s Office. The apprehension comes after a nearly 8 week joint fugitive investigation between the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office and US Marshals Service. An arrest warrant was issued for Smith back in December of 2016 alleging Smith failed to register as a sex or violent offender in Steuben County. Smith subsequently fled Indiana and Sheriff’s detectives reached out to Senior Inspector William Boothe who is the Sex Offender Investigations Coordinator for the United States Marshals Service Northern District of Indiana. Through joint fugitive investigative efforts, Smith was located in Texas. Smith was booked into the Brown County Jail and is awaiting extradition back to Steuben County, Indiana. A federal investigation is also being conducted into possible violations of the Adam Walsh Act and additional federal charges may be sought. The Adam Walsh Act is the federal sex offender registry law. The Sheriff’s Office would like to thank all those who assisted with providing tips and information.
