Early morning crash on I-65 results in fatality

LAKE COUNTY (GARY, IN)-- *UPDATE*

**UPDATE**  Notification has been made to the family of the deceased by the Lake County Coroner.  Samantha Salvador, 20, of Hoffman Estates, IL.  She was a passenger in the Honda Civic.

At approximatley 6:11 a.m. this morning, Troopers responded to a two vehicle crash on I-65 at the 261 mile marker.  This is approximately 500 feet south of the intersection of U.S. 20.  Preliminary investigation by Trooper Brasseur revealed that a green 2001 Honda Civic, operated by Rose E. Kacher, 19 years old of Hebron, IN, was northbound on I-65 at the 261 mile marker.  Kacher was attempting to make a left turn to go west on U.S. 20 at the stoplight.  Kacher instead drove into the turn lane to enter a business.  This left turn lane merges into a raised concrete median divider.  The Honda then drove over the divider becoming airborne.  The Honda then struck a beige 2013 Chevrolet Malibu that was traveling south bound in the left lane of I-65. The Malibu was being driven by Robert Doss, 26 of Chicago Heights, IL.

As a result of the impact, 3 passengers in the Honda Civic were treated for severe injuries.  One of the passengers that was transported to Northlake Hospital in Gary has deceased, however the name will be held pending notification of family.  One of the other passengers is being flown to Loyola and one to Indianapolis due to the severe injuries sustained. The drivers of both vehicles also sustained injuries however those injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Tpr. Brasseur would like to remind drivers to use extra caution while driving in foggy conditions.
