Fire and Severe Weather Concerns today
There are two primary concerns for today: fire and severe weather. A Red Flag Warning has been issued for this afternoon for the entire Kansas City metro area, as well as for counties south and west, from noon through 6pm. For counties outside of the warning, there is a heightened fire weather concern as gusty winds combine with dry conditions, leading to the threat for fires to spread rapidly.
As for the severe weather concerns, thunderstorms look to develop along and ahead of a cold front dropping down from the northwest through the region this evening into tonight. Some of these storms could become strong to perhaps severe with the primary hazards being gusty to damaging winds and hail. While the tornadic threat is low, it cannot be entirely ruled out. The greatest chances for these stronger storms to develop includes locations along, south, and east of a line from Unionville through the Kansas City metro area.
