Wrong Way Driver Stopped on Indiana Toll Road and Arrested for OWI
Hammond, Lake Count-Late yesterday evening, at approximately 11:18 p.m., Trooper Alaa Hamed was on a traffic stop east bound on the Indiana Toll Road at the 4.5 mile marker (this is just west of the Calumet Ave./US 41 exit. Hamed observed a 2007 Ford Taurus trying to enter onto the Toll Road by going westbound on an eastbound ramp. Hamed quickly let the car from the traffic stop go and blocked the entrance to the Toll Road mainline with his fully marked police car,that already had its emergency lights activated. Hamed got out of his police car and commanded the Taurus to stop. The Taurus abruptly stopped in the middle of the ramp.
When Hamed approached the driver’s side he saw only one occupant in the vehicle, the female driver was later identified as Linda Askew, 50 of Hammond, IN. Further investigation revealed that Askew was impaired and had a blood alcohol content of .21%. Askew was taken to Lake County Jail in Crown Point where she was incarcerated.
