Advisory

Fire/Wind/Severe Weather This Afternoon and Evening

A Red Flag Warning has been posted for the entire area for extreme fire
danger until 8PM. The Grassland Fire Danger Index values are extremely high
over the area north of Highway 400 and west of Highway 99. Fires in that area
could be extraordinarily difficult to get under control. A cold front will move
through the area in the afternoon and evening shifting winds to the northwest,
but speeds will not diminish until very late afternoon and early evening.
Thunderstorms are expected to develop mid to late afternoon somewhere
east of I-35. There is some uncertainty on exactly where/when the first storms
will develop, but once they do, storms should continue to develop and sweep
across the remainder of southeast Kansas. Some of the storms will likely be
severe. 60 to 70 mph winds are the primary threat, but ping pong ball sized
hail is also possible with isolated individual cells. There is a small tornado
threat in extreme Southeast Kansas, roughly east of highway 169. The
probability of storms increases as you get closer to the Missouri border.
