Rural Butler man arrested in connection with altercation involving a firearm.
On 03/09/2017 just after 2:30 am, the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office responded to a complaint of a person who was allegedly shot at while driving on CR 20 N near CR 100 E in Steuben County’s rural Pleasant Township. The victim alleged that he was being pursued by a vehicle just before 1:00 am after a verbal altercation occurred in the parking lot of an Angola area store when his vehicle was reportedly struck by at least one shotgun blast that came from the pursuing vehicle. Sheriff’s detectives were contacted to assist in the investigation. Through witness interviews and investigative efforts, a suspect was identified as 22 year old Derek Bailey Bryner of Butler. Bryner was subsequently located in the 3900 block of CR 57 near Butler, Indiana and taken into custody without incident. Following an interview with Sheriff’s detectives, Bryner was booked into the Steuben County Jail on one count of criminal recklessness involving a firearm, a level 5 felony. Bryner remains held in lieu of a $5,000.00 bond. The incident remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and additional charges may be sought. Assisting in the investigation were the Angola Police Department, the Butler Police Department, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, and the Indiana State Police.
