Sobriety Checkpoint Conducted in Porter County

Porter County-Friday, evening, March 17th, Indiana State Police and the Northern Porter County Traffic Safety Partnership conducted a sobriety checkpoint on U.S. 20 and Waverly in Porter.  Between 10:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m., officers checked 219 drivers that passed through the checkpoint and didn’t find any impaired drivers.  One driver was administered a portable breath test and passed.  Officers also issued one traffic ticket and two warnings.

Indiana State Police will be conducting other sobriety checkpoints throughout this year.  Motorists that are not impaired can expect only short delays of 2-3 minutes while passing through a checkpoint.  This checkpoint is in conjunction with the federally funded traffic safety project Operation Pull Over “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over”.

Troopers encourage all motorists to call 911 or the closest police department when they observe another motorist that may be impaired.  Be prepared to give a description of the vehicle, location and direction of travel.

The Indiana State Police are committed to traffic safety and will continue to conduct saturation patrol and sobriety checkpoints to apprehend impaired drivers and to deter others from drinking and driving.

All criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
