A state prison inmate has been placed on escape status after walking away from a minimum-security facility.
Inmate Robert Running Shield left the Rapid City Community Work Center without authorization during the evening of March 27.
Running Shield, age 51, is Native American. He is 6 feet 1 inches tall and weighs approximately 170 pounds. He has partially gray hair and brown eyes.
Running Shield is currently serving a 10-year sentence with 6 years suspended for possession of a controlled substance out of Minnehaha County. He has additional concurrent sentences for failure to appear and possession of a controlled substance.
Leaving a non-secure correctional facility without authorization constitutes second-degree escape, a class 5 felony, and is punishable by a maximum of 5 years in prison. South Dakota Codified Law 22-11A-5 states that any person who conceals any prisoner knowing that the prisoner has escaped is guilty of a Class 5 felony.
