Chula Vista Police Officers Save Woman’s Life
This morning at about 8:15 a.m. Chula Vista Police Department patrol officers responded to a call of a hazardous driver in the area of 200 Broadway in Chula Vista. The driver had hit a parked vehicle in the area, was driving the wrong way on Fourth Avenue, and the vehicle was smoking. The officers found the vehicle and attempted to stop the driver who was Eastbound in the 300 block of F Street. The driver did not stop and crashed into the center median at 4th and F Street, directly in front of the Police Department. The driver became high sided, immobilizing the vehicle, but continued to accelerate causing the tires to spin and eventually burn. Officers immediately recognized the female driver was unresponsive and likely having a medical issue. The driver was unable to cooperate with officer’s directions to take her foot off the accelerator. Officers broke the vehicle’s window and were able to safely remove the driver and render medical aid. Three officers received minor injuries.
Police Chief Roxana Kennedy, said “Fortunately the officers were able to take lifesaving action by immediately removing the woman from her vehicle. We were concerned her vehicle could become dislodged and turn into a missile at any point.” Chief Kennedy further stated “I am so proud of our officer’s actions today. This is an example of the dangers our officers protect our community against.”
The female driver was transported to the hospital for further evaluation. The officers were treated for glass injuries to the hands and eyes.
