Crime Prevention Tips -

This Spring Declutter your Digital Life

The Department of Homeland Security recommends you extend your spring cleaning to include your “Digital Life”.

Computers contain a vast amount of personal information and should be updated with current security software.

“Apps” should be reviewed, and any applications that are no longer being used should be deleted. This not only provides your device with more storage, you will be removing any permissions the app has to gather information about you.

Update to a strong authentication especially when doing on-line banking. Two-factor authentication, such as a PIN sent to your mobile device, will help verify a user authorized to access an account.

Clean up your online posts. Review social media accounts, delete old posts and photos that may not represent your current views.

Review your online Privacy settings for any and all social media accounts.

Remove all personal information before you dispose of any device. “Clearing” information from devices any device you may be giving away for others to use. Visit US-Cert “Disposing of Devices Safely” –

Remember, besides computers, smart phones and gaming systems should also be de-cluttered or cleared before they are thrown out.
