NEWS RELEASE - APD INVESTIGATING SHOOTING
On May 11, 2017 around 2:30 p.m., Arlington officers responded to a suspicious persons call at the 600 block of E. Front St. Someone from the local car sales business contacted the police and reported a man parked near the location had been coming to the business demanding to speak to the owner regarding an unknown situation.
Officers arrived on scene and as they were approaching the vehicle, they could hear a sound that indicated the man had a firearm. The officers quickly retreated. The suspect drove his vehicle to another area on the street. Officers repositioned their patrol cars behind the suspect vehicle and attempted to make contact with him. They tried negotiating with him for a couple of hours.
SWAT later responded to the scene and attempted to get the suspect to surrender. The SWAT officers positioned an armored vehicle in front of the suspect's vehicle to prevent him from going mobile and fleeing the area. The suspect discharged a shotgun through the passenger window of his vehicle. SWAT personnel deployed gas in the direction of the suspect to gain compliance. The suspect discharged his shotgun out of the driver's side window in the direction of officers. Officers returned fire, striking the suspect.
The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office will release the identity of the deceased once next of kin notifications have been made.
Officers involved were not injured. Investigators are still on scene trying to sort out the details that occurred prior to their arrival. A shotgun was recovered from the suspect.
