Residential burglaries have steadily increased over the past few years.  Crooks do their homework, profile and scout-out the best houses to burglarize.  What are they looking for?  Here are some DO’S and DON’T’S that may help your home security:

DO:

• Lock all doors and windows
• Keep an eye out for your neighborhood and ask your neighbors to do the same
• If you see a suspicious person or car, call the police
• Exchange contact information with your nearby trusted neighbors
• Consider a monitored alarm system (with yard sign)
• Consider a quality video recording surveillance system (cameras)
• Stop your mail/newspaper when you leave for more than a couple days, or have someone collect it for you
• Improve lighting in/around your home (motion lights/timers).  Thieves avoid well-lit areas.
• Notify Lakewood Station that you would like Vacation Patrol Checks while you are away
• Join Artesia’s Neighborhood Watch / Crime Watch Program for monthly meetings and electronic information sharing

• Leave your home unsecured
• Let mail/newspapers build up
• Leave shoes on your porch.  Crooks look for this.  This is a sign that the residents may be of Asian or South Asian descent.  Certain cultures are known to retain more cash in their homes.  Consider placing shoes just inside the door or in the garage
• Not call the police when you see a suspicious person or car that does not belong in your neighborhood
• Just keep your fingers crossed and hope it doesn’t happen to you.  Do something to make your home more secure!
