UPDATE: MAWC Ends Water Conservation Notice

Temporary Repairs Satisfactory for Now

NEW STANTON (May 18) – The Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County lifted its Water Conservation Notice Thursday after damage from a May 14 power surge was temporarily repaired to the point that pump capacity and water tower levels have returned to near normal.

“We want to thank the customers for conserving when they were asked, and their cooperation while we made repairs,” said Michael F. Kukura, resident manager of the MAWC.

The power substation at the Indian Creek Water Treatment Plant in Connellsville was damaged in a power surge May 14, and several high amperage switches and other equipment were destroyed. While those components have been successfully bridged – those repairs are not permanent. It may take some time for new parts to arrive due to the high power being handled at the substation.

Approximately 107,000 of the authority’s 120,000 customers were affected, but can now return to use water as normal.

“The customers were very helpful, and prevented this situation from developing into a crisis, so we want to thank them for working with us to conserve,” said Brian Hohman, business manager for MAWC.
