Artesians pay tribute at Artesia's Memorial Day Ceremony
Captain Jim Wolak and Sergeant Greg Knapp joined Artesia Mayor Ali Taj, Mayor Pro Tem Sally Flowers, Councilmen Tony Lima and Miguel Canales at Artesia’s Memorial Day Ceremony yesterday in Artesia. Artesians gathered to pay tribute to the men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Teens from the AJ Padelford Teen Center were also recognized for a poster they created based on the poem “In Flander’s Fields.” A bag piper concluded the ceremony by playing “Taps.” All-in-all, it was another beautiful cay in the city of Artesia.
In Flanders Fields
John McCrae, 1872 - 1918
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place, and in the sky,
The larks, still bravely singing, fly,
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead; short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe!
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high!
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
