Beware of Current "Scams"
Northfield Township Police continue to warn our residents and community members to beware of current “Scams”
Residents in other cities have been contacted from callers representing themselves as employees of the Geek Squad –to help with computer issues. This Scam convinced the resident that a deposit error had been made to his account which could cause the fraudulent Geek Squad associate to lose his job. The Scammer was authorized to access the resident’s computer where a $900 purchase of iTunes gift cards was made.
In Hamburg Township a resident received a call from a person identifying himself as a county deputy from the state of Washington. This caller had personal information on the resident and also identified as an actual name from an official government website (the resident was checking out the caller’s story); the caller convinced the resident, the call was legitimate and that money needed to be wired to clear up an outstanding warrant. Partial payment was made before the resident realized it was a scam. After refusing to pay, the resident became a victim of a swatting call – police responded to the residence believing a serious incident was in progress.
If you should ever receive an unsolicited call from an agency –ignore the call or call direct the local agency. Never call a phone number supplied by the unsolicited caller.
If you should get a call from someone representing themselves as an officer, know that no police department will ever contact you to pay a fine over the phone. Ask the name of the caller and the department he represents, call that department to report the incident.
