Fraud Friday--Undeliverable Package Scam

A local resident called police yesterday to report a voicemail message she received containing information about an undeliverable package associated with her social security number. A callback number of 904-862-2944 was provided and later determined to be used for scams. She did not return the call. Had she returned the call, she would likely have been asked for her social security number so they could "track the package" which may have turned into an identity theft incident.

Social Engineering fraud is defined as scams criminals use to deceive victims into providing personal identifying information and/or money. According to a January 2017 Forbes article, victims of social engineering impersonation attacks lost $4,200 on average. Businesses that are targeted stand to lose tens of thousands of dollars.

Don't be a victim. Choose the organizations and individuals you provide personal information to very carefully. Ask them how they manage and store it. Never provide PPI to someone unknown to you who solicits your information via email, phone, or text messaging.
