A resident of Lake Lure received a call from someone claiming to be Duke Energy. The caller claimed that the resident's account was behind and he owed money. The caller stated that because of it being a late account that instead of paying online, he would need to go to purchase a money card, then call the caller back with the number on the card.
Thankfully the resident doubted the call and called the Lake Lure Police Department.
If you received a call demanding that you owe money and you need to pay, hang up and call the company yourself. Don't entertain scam callers. Hang up immediately. And be pretty sure that any caller asking you to go get a money card and call them back with the number, is a scammer.
If you are ever suspicious of a call you've received please call your local police or the company itself.
