Safety Tip:
Fireworks during the Fourth of July are as traditional as cookouts and parades. But did you know that in America more fire are reported on the Fourth of July than on any other day of the year? Over half of these fires are caused by fireworks, but with a little common sense and following some simple safety tips, you can still enjoy the holiday with its fireworks and stay safe.
- Buy only those fireworks that are legal for the City of Pocatello (remember safe & sane)
- Avoid buying fireworks that are packaged in brown paper. This is often a sign that the fireworks were made for professional displays only
- Never use in a hazardous fire area (such as Johnny Creek, Satterfield, or the West Bench)
- Never give fireworks to small children
- Closely supervise older children
- Don’t allow running or boisterous play while fireworks are being used
- Read and follow all warnings printed on the label
- Light fireworks outdoors in a clear area away from houses and flammable materials
- Keep a bucket of water or a water supply nearby for emergencies
- Don’t try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks – instead soak them with water and throw them away
- Be sure other people are out of range before lighting fireworks
- Never ignite fireworks in a container, especially one made of glass or metal
- Store fireworks in a dry, cool place
- Never throw or shoot fireworks at another person
- Never experiment or attempt to make your own fireworks. Do not try to alter or combine fireworks
- Light all fireworks with a long-handled lighter, jumbo punk or a flare
- Keep your body back and reach out to light the fuse
- Ask everyone to drop their spent sparklers in a bucket of water after each use
- Allow adequate time for the fireworks to cool, and then clean up the area after the show
- Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Have a “designated shooter” if alcohol is included in your celebrations
Even simple fireworks like sparklers can do serious injury. Sparklers burn at temperatures that range from 1200 to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit; hot enough to melt glass and some metals. Please think of that before you hand one to a four year old.
