The Morgan Hill Police Department conducted directed fireworks enforcement on July 4th citing 20 people for fireworks related violations. The department pulled out all the stops in the large-scale operation using undercover vehicles and approximately 20 officers to help curtail the increase in aerial and explosive fireworks.

The need for enforcement was formed when the department reached out to the community early this calendar year and asked what issues were important when reflecting on the quality of life here in Morgan Hill. One of the top areas was “illegal fireworks” and how it effects the community’s safety each year during the 4th of July holiday celebrations. The City Council listened and amended the fireworks ordinance so that fireworks related fines were tripled during the week of 4th of July. Prior to enforcement, the department sent out information through multiple formats including print, email, social media, television and word of mouth reminding people about illegal fireworks and the police department’s plan for enforcing a zero-tolerance policy on the 4th of July.

On July 4th, the Morgan Hill Police Department in conjunction with Cal Fire had specific teams patrolling the city focused on those who made the decision to discharge fireworks. The teams spent the night conducting proactive enforcement and responding to calls for service in which illegal fireworks were being set off. At the end of the night officers issued 20 citations and collected a large amount of unspent illegal fireworks. The illegal fireworks suppression operation not only re-enforced the city’s zero tolerance policy on illegal fireworks but for the first time in the recent past the communications center received zero fireworks related calls after midnight.

This was an especially busy day for the department as it staffed multiple events during the 36-hour period and two significant events simultaneously – the fireworks show at the Outdoor Sports Center and the fireworks enforcement detail that night. “I am especially proud of the dedication of our entire team – civilian and sworn, paid and volunteer – for their sacrifice away from their families and friends so that others can enjoy and fun and safe Independence Day celebration. Their efforts are truly commendable,” said Morgan Hill Police Chief David Swing.
