Message from Mayor R. Rex Parris: Heat Alert in effect for the City of Lancaster. Cooling Center at MOAH open now!

Message from City of Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris:

"The health and safety of you and your loved ones is extremely important. Due to the current heat wave, we are providing tips on how to stay healthy during hot weather. Research tells us that once temperatures reach 104 degrees, the heat can cause significant health consequences if nothing is done to decrease our body temperature. A few simple ways to beat the heat include: staying inside air conditioned buildings; drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day; and limiting outdoor activities to when it’s coolest, such as during the morning or the evening hours. Be safe and stay cool!"

Additionally, the City of Lancaster’s Cooling Center at MOAH is open through July 31.

Instructions:

•Avoid the sun from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. when the burning rays are strongest. •Stay in air conditioning during peak heat hours. •Drink plenty of fluids. Avoid alcohol, sweetened drinks, and caffeine. •If no air conditioning is available, take a cool shower twice a day and visit a public air conditioned facility (do not rely on fans and open windows as the primary method of staying cool). •Check on elderly neighbors, as well as family and friends who may not have air conditioning. •Never leave a child or infant unattended in a vehicle. It is not only very dangerous; it is also illegal. •Make sure to provide children and infants with plenty to drink, as they can become dehydrated very quickly. •Don’t forget about pets; they need plenty of water and shade. •Never leave a pet in a parked vehicle – even with the windows down. •Outdoor workers and athletes are encouraged to take frequent rests. •Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and light-colored, lightweight, loose-fitting clothes when outdoors. •Reduce physical activity. •Use sun screen with a sun protection factor of at least 15.
