WANTED: Oceans-Eleven Bandit who robbed Sunglass Hut in Topanga #LAPD

Can You ID the Oceans-Eleven Bandit?

Canoga Park.  Los Angeles detectives have release video of a man who committed an armed take-over robbery at the Sunglass Hut where the suspect sprayed painted over security cameras, then ordered the clerk to fill trash bags full of designer sunglasses, getting away with over $10,000 in merchandise and cash.

“I can’t remember a robbery so brazen,” said Det. Fernando Avila, robbery investigator at the Topanga Police Station.  “Most crooks try to disguise their faces and don’t worry about the cameras, but this crook took a different approach, like a scene out of Oceans-Eleven.

The robbery took place at the Village Shopping Center on Topanaga Boulevard on the morning of July 6, 2017.

Despite the suspect’s best efforts, detectives got clear footage of the suspect outside the store, carrying several trash bags full of loot.  This footage was part of the mall’s security system.  “The reality is; today, you can’t go anywhere without leaving your image behind,” Det. Avila explained.

The suspect is described as White, possibly Middle Eastern, about 6 feet tall, medium build, and 25 to 30 years old.  He wore a backward baseball cap and carried a duffel bag.  “Anyone who knows this man should be able to recognize him easily,” Det. Avila added.  The suspect displayed a compact semi-auto handgun and a knife during the robbery.  The female clerk was not injured in the robbery.

Anyone with information in this case is urged to call Det. Fernando Avila, Topanga Detective Division, at (818) 756-3520.  Anonymous tips can be called into Crimestoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477), or by texting 274637 (C-R-I-M-E-S on most keypads) with a cell phone.  All text messages should begin with the letters “LAPD.”  Online tips may be placed at www.LAPDOnline.org, click on “webtips” and follow the prompts.

Det. Avila is available for interviews at Topanga Police Station until 4 PM.  Video is available at the police station by shooting off the screen.
