Over the previous weekend several business owners in the Kenwood Business Park off Highway 85 North reported damage to mailboxes and mail stolen. Among the items stolen included checks.

Commercial area mailboxes are often targeted by criminals looking for bank account information. Commercial business account numbers are sold and then used to counterfeit checks or other means of fraud.

The same information is often stolen from residential mailboxes. Personal checks, gift cards and even cash are the main targets in residential areas. The red flag on the mailbox is a great signal to criminals you have placed an item there they want.

Please use caution placing items in mailboxes at the street in front of your home or office. It is recommended you use drop locations at the post office for added security.
