Keep wild animals wild!
Recently, much to our surprise after so much public outreach and education last summer, our police department has recently observed Stallion Springs residents feeding wild elk.
This endangers both wild animals, residents and vehicular traffic as well. It interferes with the natural food chain, draws predatory animals into the lower portions of our community (mountain lions...) and interferes with the elk's future mating. The ramifications of humans feeding wild animals including wild elk are well documented.
California Fish and Wildlife states:
Keep Me Wild
Wild animals don’t need your handouts.
They need your respect.
Whether you live in a city or a rural part of California, wild animals are your neighbors. Most wild animals will not bother you. They naturally fear humans and keep their distance – so long as they remain fully wild.
...But if wild animals have access to human food and garbage, they want more and more. They lose their natural fear of humans and can become aggressive.
...Allowing wild animals access to human food is dead wrong.
Please...Keep them wild.
The Stallion Springs Police Department urges you to Keep Wild Animals Wild! Please don't further endanger our beautiful elk and the environment that allows them to safely visit us.
The Stallion Springs Police Department will enforce all applicable California Fish and Wildlife, and other applicable codes to safeguard our elk.
Thank you so very much for your cooperation in this effort.
