Twenty-Two Mile Pursuit Ends With Two Arrests
On July 22nd, 2017 at approximately 02:32am SHASCOM Dispatch broadcasted a be on the look out (BOLO) for a stolen vehicle that was taken during a residential burglary. The vehicle theft and burglary had just been reported to the Shasta County Sheriff Department.
At about 2:39 A.M. an Anderson Police Officer was conducting an extra patrol of the Walmart parking lot when he observed the reported stolen vehicle driving through the parking lot with no headlights. The vehicle was followed southbound on Rhonda Rd. to Castlewood Dr. where additional units arrived to assist. A high-risk traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle on Rhonda Rd. near Sigma Dr. with two Anderson Police Officers and one Shasta County Sheriff Deputy. Additional deputies joined and assisted in the pursuit. Instead of yielding the vehicle fled to Gas Point Rd. and then into the Happy Valley area.
The vehicle reached speeds of over 100 MPH. Due to little to no traffic and a reduced risk to the motoring public the pursuit was continued through Happy Valley. A spike strip was deployed by a Shasta County Sheriff Deputy and deflated three of the vehicle tires. Just prior to hitting the spike strip the vehicle swerved at the deputy deploying the strip. With three flat tires, the vehicle eventually slowed to 15 MPH. Due to the driver’s disregard for public safety and the attempt to hit the deputy, the vehicle was rammed by the Anderson officer causing it to spin out. There was moderate damage to the stolen vehicle and minor damage to the patrol car. No other property was damaged during the pursuit.
The driver, Jacob Tremayne, 20, of Cottonwood, tried to switch seats, getting into the backseat of the vehicle and claiming that the driver fled on foot. Tremayne and the passenger, Luis Ayala, 36, of Redding, made their first good decision and surrendered to K9 Chance, Anderson Officers, and Shasta County Deputies.
During an interview Tremayne said he ran because Ayala told him to. Ayala admitted to committing the residential burglary and stealing the vehicle. Ayala also had three active felony arrest warrants for vehicle theft, felony evading, and possession of a stolen vehicle with a prior.
Tremayne was placed under arrest and booked into the Shasta County Jail on charges of felony evading, driving on the wrong side of the road while evading, possession of a stolen vehicle, and assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer. Ayala was booked into the Shasta County Jail on his warrants and charges related to the residential burglary and vehicle theft.
