Dine and Dash Ends in Two Arrest

On Friday, July 28th 2017, at about 12:20 P.M., the Anderson Police Department received several calls regarding a possible disturbance at Humble Joes restaurant. As Anderson Police Officers were driving to the location, dispatch updated officers advising a male and female had fled the restaurant on foot.

The owner of Humble Joes chased after both the male and female for 1/3 of a mile, and with the help of a citizen, were able to detain both suspects as officers arrived on scene. The female was found to be Ashley Rose SLAVENS, age 27, of Anderson. The male was found to be Joseph Dexter ATCHLEY, age 27, of Redding.

During the course of the investigation it was learned SLAVENS and ATCHLEY enjoyed a meal at Humble Joes with a bill totaling $33.14. After the meal was consumed both SLAVENS and ATCHLEY gathered their backpack and large purse and stepped outside of the restaurant to have a cigarette. SLAVENS nor ATCHLEY made any attempt to pay or ask for the bill prior to exiting the restaurant.

The owner of the restaurant became suspicious of SLAVENS and ATCHLEY, due to them staying outside for an extended period of time. The owner went outside of the restaurant and contacted both SLAVENS and ATCHLEY, who were now in the parking lot. The owner asked if they were going to pay for their food at which time both SLAVENS and ATCHLEY fled on foot. The owner pursued both of them without hesitation.

Officers determined neither SLAVENS nor ATCHLEY had any means to pay for their consumed food. The Anderson Police Department executed a citizen’s arrest on behalf of the owner of Humble Joes, and subsequently SLAVENS and ATCHLEY were booked into Shasta County Jail for California Penal Code Section 537(a) Defrauding an Innkeeper (failure to pay for consumed food).

The Anderson Police Department appreciates the assistance from its citizens and alert business owners and works closely with both in an effort to reduce crime throughout the City of Anderson.
