Chula Vista Officers Pull Unconscious Man from Burning Vehicle after Short Pursuit
On 7-31-17 at about 2:15 a.m. Chula Vista Police Officers responded to a report of a fight occurring in the 400 block of L Street. The 911 caller said that argument involved three people and one of them left the scene in a white Chrysler PT Cruiser.
While checking the area one responding officer saw a white Chrysler PT Cruiser traveling at a high rate of speed westbound in the 400 block of L Street. The vehicle looked as if it had already been in an accident as it had body damage and sparks were coming from the ground as it dragged hanging car parts.
The Officer pursued the PT Cruiser being driven by a lone occupant, later identified as a 19-year-old male (identification not to be released at this time). The Chula Vista Officer was joined by at least two others officers in the pursuit as it reached speeds over 80 mph on L Street, failing to stop for a red light at Broadway. The vehicle continued westbound and ended when it drove through the intersection at Bay Blvd and L Street, crashing through the guard rail and flying roughly 100 feet into a concrete lined ditch.
Two Chula Vista Police Officers ran down to the crashed vehicle finding the male driver unconscious in the passenger compartment of the now-burning car. The officers had to cut their way through a fence using bolt cutters to reach the vehicle. Once at the vehicle they each grabbed an arm and pulled the still unconscious 19-year-old from the vehicle. Seconds later the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames.
The male driver suffered a fractured leg and other injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
The Chula Vista Traffic Division responded to investigate the collision. The driver was tested for alcohol consumption however, due to the extent of the injuries, was not immediately arrested.
The investigation will be completed and sent to the District Attorney’s Office for consideration for charges that may include driving under the influence and felony evasion. The 19-year-old is not suspected of any other crimes at this time.
