MODESTO, CA – A Modesto man believed to be responsible for multiple community mailbox break-ins, was arrested following a traffic stop.
Officers stopped 25-year-old Matthew Boone early Friday morning and discovered he had an active warrant for his arrest. During a search of his vehicle, burglary tools, multiple pieces of stolen mail, and methamphetamine were found inside. Officers contacted Property Crimes detectives and worked with them to author a search warrant for Boone’s residence in the 3000 block of Breckenridge Way. Additional stolen mail and approximately 40 stolen credit cards were discovered, along with property belonging to the United States Postal Service.
Detectives believe Boone is responsible for multiple community mailbox break-ins throughout the northeast area of Modesto. He was subsequently booked into the Stanislaus County Jail for identity theft, mail theft, possession of burglary tools, possession of stolen property, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and committing a crime while out on bail. He had previously been arrested for similar offenses, but was out on bail. Boone was also arrested for an unrelated identity theft warrant.
The holiday season is quickly approaching and there will likely be an increase in delivered mail, including packages. Investigators ask that you take these simple steps to reduce your chances of becoming a victim.
• Require a signature for delivered packages.
• Can’t require a signature? Have your packages delivered to you at work or to someone you know will be home.
• If packages are delivered to your residence, bring them inside immediately.
• Do not put outgoing mail in your mailbox. Instead, deliver it to the post office.
• Have personal checks delivered to your bank for pick-up.
• Check your mail daily.
• Be a good neighbor. Report suspicious activity in your neighborhood immediately to police.
