Modesto, CA – Officers are investigating a traffic collision that claimed the life of a Modesto man.
At about 6 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to a report of a traffic collision involving a motorcycle in the 900 block of Standiford Avenue. The motorcyclist, identified as 21-year-old Christian Applegate was rushed to a local hospital with critical injuries. Hours after the collision, investigators learned that the victim succumbed to his injuries.
The early investigation indicates that 77-year-old Ellen Sanchez was stopped along the curb facing eastbound. Sanchez started to make a U-turn in front of Applegate who was traveling at a high rate of speed eastbound on Standiford Avenue in the lane closest to the curb.
As standard practice in a fatal vehicle collision, the Modesto Police Department Traffic Unit has initiated a comprehensive collision investigation. This investigation is in the early stages and witness statements, as well as physical evidence, are being thoroughly evaluated before any collision factor or cause will be determined.
