Safety Tip:

The solar eclipse will take place on Monday August 21st. There have been varying prediction on how many people will come to southeast Idaho to view the eclipse. Here are a few tips to prepare yourself and your family for this event:

• Fuel – Traffic may be delayed as eclipse watchers go towards the path of totality and after the eclipse has passed. Make sure your tank is topped off before leaving to ensure that you have enough fuel to idle if traffic is slowed considerably.

• Food – As with fuel for your vehicle, your body will need fuel if a long stay in your vehicle becomes a reality. Take enough snacks and other food to ensure you don’t miss a meal.

• Water – Hydrate, hydrate, and hydrate some more. As a guide, adults should consume 64 oz. of water per day and more on hot days. Highs in East Idaho for August hover over 90 degrees, so plan to bring extra water to stay hydrated.

• Medication – Whether you need a daily prescription medication or something over the counter, take what you need with you to the path of totalilty to ensure you have your medicine when and where you need it.

• Double check – Do you have hats, sunglasses, eclipse-watching glasses, and other necessities? Once you’re on the road, it may be difficult to get back so you may only get one chance at getting your packing right.

• Technology – While technology can certainly make things easier, it also has the potential for interruption, especially, if a large number of people attempt to utilize their phones, tablets, or other devices. If you’re unfamiliar with the area, have a paper map that you can refer to.

• Communication Plan- should cell phones go down, have a plan of how you will stay in touch with family members.
