Reserve Officer Justin Qualle has accepted a full-time police officer position with the department. Officer Qualle’s full-time status will take effect today. This full-time position became available due to the recent retirement of Officer Anthony DeMarinis and departure of Sergeant Mario Ysit to a neighboring police agency. The department is still accepting applications to fill the one vacant police officer position.
In other department news, Detectives Alex Burgos and Gordon West will be transferring from the investigations unit, back to patrol duties as part of their normal rotational cycle. Both Detective Burgos and Detective West have completed their 5-year assignments in the Investigations Division. Newly selected Detectives Paul Staley and Richard Francis will be starting their initial terms as detectives very soon.
Officer Leroy Sanchez has recently completed his 3- year assignment as the department’s School Resource Officer and has been rotated back to patrol. Officer Trevor McGinnis has been selected to fill the SRO position. Officer McGinnis was previously our SRO from 2009-2014.
In the upcoming months the department will be conducting internal interviews for a vacant Sergeant position and to fill an additional Field Training Officer position.
Department spokesperson, Lieutenant Steve Merchant said the department is used to overcoming staffing challenges. Merchant said, “Whether it’s retirements, rotational assignment changes, new hires or someone leaving for another agency, we are adept at putting our best people in key assignments to enhance our departments’ ability to serve the public.”
