Reference: Fatal Accident
The Norton Shores Police Department is investigating a fatal crash that occurred today at the corner of Broadway and Huizenga. The crash occurred at approximately 11:25 a.m and is still under investigation.
Norton Shores officers responded to a Retail Fraud complaint at Meijer, 700 W. Norton Ave. Officers found that a suspect had stolen several bottles of liquor and had been involved in several other larcenies in recent days. The suspect had fled the store in a stolen 2010 Gray Ford Fusion out of Grand Rapids.
A Norton Shores officer saw the suspect vehicle on Getty Street in a parking lot near Norton Ave. When he attempted to identify the driver the vehicle sped off north bound on Getty st.
The Officer attempted to stop the vehicle on Getty Street but the vehicle refused to stop. The vehicle continued north on Getty near Broadway where the officer terminated the pursuit. The short pursuit was terminated due to weather conditions and high traffic density.
The suspect turned on Broadway east bound continuing at a high rate of speed. The officer observed a crash at Broadway and Huizenga, so he responded there and found the suspect vehicle and a 2014 Dodge Journey crashed at the intersection. Medical assistance was requested and CPR was started, but the driver of the Dodge Journey was pronounced dead at the scene. The deceased driver is identified as Duane Quigg (92 yrs) of Norton Shores. The passenger of the Dodge Journey was transported to Hackley hospital with serious injuries. The passenger is a Norton Shores resident identified as Elaine Carsok (90 yrs).
The suspect was identified as a male, 39 yrs old and resides in Grand Rapids. He sustained unknown injuries and was taken to the hospital. His identity will not be released until his arraignment on multiple felonies. The suspect also already had multiple warrants for his arrest out of Kent County. Charges are being discussed with the Muskegon County Prosecutor’s office.
The Michigan State Police were called to assist with the crash investigation.
The Norton Shores Police and Fire Departments were assisted at the scene by the Michigan State Police, Muskegon Hts Police and the Norton Shores Fire Department.
