On Aug. 11, 2017, a residential robbery and sexual assault occurred on the 1000 block of Ringwood Avenue. The suspect, forced entry into a home, robbed and sexually assaulted the 65 year old victim. The victim was able to escape and notified the Menlo Park Police Department. Officers arrived within minutes of the call and located the suspect on the Ringwood pedestrian overcrossing. A police K9 was deployed to apprehend the suspect but in an effort to escape, the suspect jumped 30 feet onto the roadway below, suffering incapacitating injuries and was taken into custody. The suspect was identified as Lamar Dekari Stevens, a 36 year old African-American male resident of San Jose, who is currently on state parole with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR).
Due to Stevens’ injuries he was admitted for medical treatment at Stanford Medical Center, under police guard. Stevens received medical treatment at Stanford Medical Center and the Menlo Park Police Department requested mutual aid from other San Mateo County law enforcement agencies to assist in the 24 hour security of the suspect. Also, due to his injuries, the California Department of Corrections (CDC) did not place a parole hold on Stevens.
During this time, the investigation into this case was completed and transferred to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office. A complaint was filed and an arrest warrant was issued for Stevens. The warrant was signed Aug. 14, 2017, by Judge Steven Dylina. The warrant listed the following charges: 3 counts 220(b) PC-assault to commit sexual crimes during a residential burglary, 288(c)(2)(a) PC- lewd acts by force, 664/286 PC-attempted sodomy by force, 286(c)(2)(a) PC- sodomy by force, 243.4 PC-sexual battery by force, 460(a) PC-first degree burglary, 212.5 PC-first degree robbery, 487(a) PC-grand theft. The warrant had a bail of $8 million.
On Aug. 18, 2017, seven days after the original crime, Stanford Medical Center cleared Stevens for incarceration and at 8:40 p.m., Menlo Park Police Detectives took Stevens into custody for the above arrest warrant. He was booked into the San Mateo County Jail without further incident.
