I-5 Corridor Improvement

Week of August 20, 2017

FLORENCE AVENUE INTERCHANGE PROJECT
Tuesday night, Aug. 22 through Thursday night, Aug. 24 crews will be performing night work between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. on Florence Avenue at Orr and Day Road. The contractor will be potholing to locate underground utilities. This work will require nightly closures on Florence Avenue for all eastbound traffic, between Studebaker Road and Orr and Day Road; westbound traffic on Florence Avenue will remain open. In addition, there will be no northbound access to Orr and Day Road from Florence Avenue. Please be advised, this work may cause intermittent noise disruption, but is not expected to generate sustained loud construction activity.

Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes if possible, as shown on the map below.

Crews have begun work to construct the new sound wall along the northbound I-5 Florence Avenue on-ramp, adjacent to Longworth Avenue. Over the next three weeks, crews will continue drilling CIDH (cast in drilled hole) piles along northbound I-5. This operation will be conducted weekdays, between 6:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

A portion of the sidewalk on Longworth Avenue, adjacent to the northbound I-5, has been closed to accommodate sound wall reconstruction. A chain link fence has been installed to close this area of the sidewalk from public access through the end of 2017. Crews have begun removing this portion of the sidewalk and the adjoining block wall, as they prepare to reconstruct the freeway sound wall at this location. This work is currently on hold and will resume soon. Once work resumes, sidewalk/block wall removal work will take place weekdays between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and may be intermittently loud and disruptive due to concrete removal activities. The sidewalk will be restored once sound wall construction is complete.

IMPERIAL HIGHWAY & PIONEER BOULEVARD PROJECT
Demolition of the old Norwalk Boulevard / San Antonio Drive bridge at I-5 has been completed. This was the final bridge demolition for the Imperial Highway / Pioneer Boulevard project. Photos of the demolition operation are below; to view a video of the demolition activity, click here.

On Sunday, Aug. 20 and Monday, Aug. 21 the contractor will be performing nighttime operations between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., to pull out shoring boxes and will close southbound Pioneer Boulevard to traffic between Crewe Street and Imperial Highway.

Sunday, Aug. 20 through Thursday, Aug. 24, Imperial Highway will be closed nightly from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., between Adoree Street and South Frontage Road, for drilling operations for CIDH (cast in drilled hole) piles.

On Tuesday, Aug. 22 between 8:30 p.m. and 6 a.m., Imperial Highway will be closed between Adoree Street and South Frontage Road for concrete operations.

Closure areas are shown in red on the maps below; detour routes are highlighted in green. Unless otherwise noted, work will be performed between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.

This information can also be found on the project Google map.

Pile driving activity along I-5 at Pioneer Boulevard and Imperial Highway is ongoing; this work will be conducted weekdays between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and will be ongoing intermittently for approximately four more weeks. Please be advised this work may be loud and disruptive due to equipment noise, vibration, and pounding related to pile driving activity.

As crews work on Imperial Highway, Norwalk Boulevard and Pioneer Boulevard bridges at I-5, one lane in each direction will be closed on each street (at I-5) during the daytime, between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

ROSECRANS AVENUE & BLOOMFIELD AVENUE BRIDGE PROJECT
Beginning as early as Monday night, Aug. 21, crews will close Firestone Boulevard south, between Shoemaker Avenue and Carmenita Road (shown in red below), nightly between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m., Mondays through Fridays, for approximately the next four weeks. The contractor will be performing nightly concrete pours throughout the project area and these closures are necessary to allow for construction vehicle staging and to maintain nightly access for the contractor to their concrete plant.
.
Flaggers will be on site to maintain access for businesses within the closure area shown below in red. However there will be no through access along this portion of Firestone Boulevard south for the general public. Available alternate routes are highlighted on the map below in blue.

This information can also be found on the project Google map.

Crews have begun work to reconstruct N. Firestone Boulevard, between the main entrance of Norwalk Village Mobile Home Park and Rosecrans Avenue. In order to reconstruct the street, the main driveway for the Norwalk Village Mobile Home Park will be closed to all traffic through fall 2017. While this driveway is closed, access to enter and exit the community will be maintained via the back driveway near the storage lot. There will be no through access to Rosecrans Avenue from N. Firestone Boulevard, while this work is being conducted. The closure area is shown on the map below in red; the detour route is shown in green.

VALLEY VIEW AVENUE INTERCHANGE PROJECT
On Thursday morning, Aug. 24, crews will close the southbound Valley View Avenue left hand turn lane to S. Firestone Boulevard. The left-turn lane will remain closed for approximately 18 months. Motorists will be detoured to head south on Artesia Boulevard to access the southbound I-5 freeway on-ramp (shown in red on the map below; detour route highlighted in green).

Pile driving and shoring activities are ongoing on the south side of Valley View Avenue. This work will be conducted weekdays during the daytime between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
