28 Department Members and Two Others
Recognized for Heroic Actions at
2017 Lifesaving Awards Ceremony
On Wednesday, August 30, 2017, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department formally recognized 29 sworn personnel and one civilian for their heroic actions.
Undersheriff Jacques La Berge presented 28 deputies with the Lifesaving Award, designated for employees or reserve members of the department whose actions resulted in the saving or preservation of a human life, which would have been otherwise lost without their direct involvement.
Undersheriff La Berge also presented one Pasadena Police Department officer with a Star Scroll for his display of unselfish commitment to human life, and the Humanitarian Award to a nurse from the Department of Emergency Medicine for selflessly performing an act of personal commitment and sacrifice to help another.

On Sunday, July 24, 2016, while working in the LAC+USC Medical Center, Nurse Wijayasooriya was alerted of a female patient under the influence of narcotics who acted uncontrollably. Without hesitation, the nurse went outside and contacted the woman who leaned over the edge of a bridge stairwell. Nurse Wijayasooriya prevented the woman from jumping, called for help and convinced the woman to come down. The woman ran back up and prepared to jump, but was pulled to safety by Deputy Robinson.
For his heroic actions, Deputy Robinson received the Lifesaving Medal.
For her heroic actions, Nurse Wijayasooriya received the Humanitarian Award.

On Thursday, June 23, 2016, Deputy Chavez, assigned to Edelman Children’s Court, prevented a distraught mother who lost custody of her children from jumping over a 20-foot ledge of the building. Deputies Oblea, Roman, Santiago, and Steele assisted in pulling the woman back to safety.
For their heroic actions, Deputies Chavez, Oblea, Roman, Santiago, and Steele received the Lifesaving Medal.

At the conclusion of proceedings on Tuesday, October 11, 2016, at the Governor George Deukmejian Courthouse, a despondent woman attempted to commit suicide by jumping from the fifth floor of the building to the lobby floor. The woman wept as her body dangled in the air, but Deputy Bennett grabbed her hand as she released its grip on the glass partition. Deputies Delatorre and Delgadillo assisted Deputy Bennett, and helped pull the emotional woman to safety.
For their heroic actions, Deputies Bennett, Delatorre and Delgadillo received the Lifesaving Medal.

As Deputies Valencia-Chavira and Weil drove from the Antelope Valley Courthouse on Wednesday, August 3, 2016, to transport a female inmate, they realized the inmate suffered a medical emergency. Deputy Weil immediately pulled the radio car to the freeway shoulder, and with the assistance of Deputy Valencia-Chavira, removed the woman from the vehicle. He requested medical assistance and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation until paramedics arrived and she was transported to a local hospital.
For their heroic actions, Deputies Valencia-Chavira and Weil received the Lifesaving Medal.
Deputy Carlos D. Cisneros
When Deputy Cisneros, assigned to Carson Sheriff’s Station, responded to a traffic collision on Tuesday, January 24, 2017, and saw the driver was in physical distress. As he rendered aid, the man stopped breathing and lost his pulse. With the assistance of an unknown bystander, Deputy Cisneros removed the man from the car and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Paramedics arrived and took over lifesaving measures, and the driver regained his pulse and his breathing progressed.
For his heroic actions, Deputy Cisneros received the Lifesaving Medal.
Deputy Angel Gabriel Y. Ochoa
On Thursday February 23, 2017, Deputy Ochoa, assigned to Lomita Sheriff’s Station, responded to a rescue call for a 64-year-old woman and found her husband administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation. She was not breathing and had no pulse. Deputy Ochoa assumed administration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation from the exhausted husband and, shortly thereafter, the woman breathed on her own.
For his heroic actions, Deputy Ochoa received the Lifesaving Medal.

Deputy Jessica S. Santos
Through empathetic verbal communication, Deputies Miller and Santos, assigned to East Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station, convinced a depressed man to discard his firearm and prevented him from committing suicide.
For their heroic actions, Deputies Miller and Santos received the Lifesaving Medal.
Deputy Keenan G. Fyles
On Sunday, April 9, 2017, Deputy Fyles, assigned to Carson Sheriff’s Station, found a 20-year-old man who was unconscious and suffered an overdose. Deputy Fyles saw the man was not breathing and displayed facial discoloration, and immediately administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Arriving paramedics assumed administration of the lifesaving measure and the man was transported to a hospital, where he resumed breathing on his own.
For his heroic actions, Deputy Fyles received the Lifesaving Medal.

Deputy Darin L. Van Arsdale
On Saturday, July 2, 2016, Deputies Fink and Van Arsdale, assigned to Lancaster Sheriff’s Station, responded to a traffic collision with injuries. They discovered the suspect fled the scene, and left a father and his eight-year-old daughter lying injured in the middle of a busy roadway. Deputy Fink secured the crash site, requested medical assistance and coordinated a search for the suspect. Deputy Van Arsdale applied a tourniquet to the man’s partially-detached leg and comforted the shocked little girl.
The suspect was located and arrested for the charge of Driving Under the Influence of an Alcoholic Beverage while on felony probation.
For their heroic actions, Deputies Fink and Van Arsdale received the Lifesaving Medal.

Deputy Alejandro Bocanegra
On Thursday, June 30, 2016, Deputies Berry and Bocanegra responded to a male adult not breathing call in the city of Carson. They found the man lying on the ground, not breathing, and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Moments later, the man resumed breathing on his own and was transported to a hospital for treatment.
For their heroic actions, Deputies Berry and Bocanegra received the Lifesaving Medal.

Officer John Calderon, Pasadena Police Department
On Sunday, May 1, 2016, Deputy Aguirre, assigned to Transit Service Bureau-North, ate dinner at a Pasadena restaurant, with Officer Calderon at a nearby table in the same establishment. When another male patron of the restaurant showed signs of physical distress from choking on his food, Deputy Aguirre administered abdominal thrusts. Officer Calderon continued the lifesaving measure and the food dislodged. The man breathed again on his own and was grateful for the assistance.
For their heroic actions, Deputy Aguirre received the Lifesaving Medal and Officer Calderon received the Star Scroll.
Deputy Wyatt L. Waldron
On Tuesday, July 28, 2015, Deputy Waldron responded to a suicide attempt in the city of Palmdale, where a woman stood on the outside ledge, 60 feet above a concrete driveway, ready to jump. Deputy Waldron spoke with her in a compassionate tone and persuaded her to step back. As she did, the woman lost her balance and extended her hand to the deputy. Deputy Waldron seized her hand and brought her back to safety.
For his heroic actions, Deputy Waldron received the Lifesaving Medal.

In the early morning hours of Friday, October 21, 2016, Deputies Gonzalez, Ortiz, Rendon, and Rojas, assigned to East Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station, located a man suffering knife wounds to the neck and chest. They formed the opinion the injured man attempted suicide. They located keys near the man’s body and traced them to his vehicle. Deputies Rendon and Rojas went to the vehicle’s registered address and found an unconscious woman suffering head trauma inside the house. Deputy Rojas located the woman’s eight-year-old daughter asleep in another room, unaware of the attack. Compassionately, he covered her head, and rushed her past the gruesome scene and out of the house. Because of the deputies’ persistence, the woman was located in enough time to receive medical treatment.
For their heroic actions, Deputies Gonzalez, Ortiz, Rendon, and Rojas received the Lifesaving Medal.
Deputy Alexandra M. Panzone
On Sunday, November 20, 2016, Deputy Panzone, assigned to Lomita Sheriff’s Station, set the tone of composure when she answered a 9-1-1 call. She calmly instructed the frantic caller on how help a three-year-old choking on a piece of candy. The caller relayed the directions to the father, who administered the lifesaving measures and successfully dislodged the candy. The baby was saved.
For her heroic actions, Deputy Panzone received the Lifesaving Medal.
Deputy Juan M. Galvez
On Tuesday, November 15, 2016, Deputy Galvez, assigned to Risk Management Bureau, saved the life of his coworker. He heard her in the office choking on a piece of candy and saw her display signs of distress. He administered abdominal thrusts and caused the candy to dislodge. The grateful coworker coughed and breathed again on her own.
For his heroic actions, Deputy Galvez received the Lifesaving Medal.
